A quick call from you could change the tide for cholera in Haiti. Some members of the US House of Representatives are ready to act, but they need your representative to join them.
Renette Veirgélan and her 10-month old baby contracted cholera in 2010. Cholera had been previously unknown in Haiti. Renette recovered. Her child did not.“I haven’t been in my right mind since then. My thoughts are consumed by the memory of my baby.” She continues, “I am afraid of contracting cholera again. I’m afraid for my children. I only drink treated water, I wash my hands. I am cautious.” Cholera is cruel. It poses a threat as long as a lingers in the environment. (Read more about people hurt by cholera here.)
The UN has refused to take responsibility for introducing cholera into Haiti. They have not set up a system to compensate the victims. Despite being chastised by their own experts, they have not gone far enough to prevent new infections and more deaths. Health centers are on red alert as the rainy season begins. One received 3-5 new cases per day. The UN must take responsibility for the damage they’ve done. They must repair the lives they’ve damaged.
And now US citizens have an opportunity. Members of the US House of Representatives are demanding action. We need every call we can get. Call your Representative and urge him or her to sign the letter written by Mia Love (R-Utah) and John Conyers (D-Michagan). Do it before May 31st. And pass it on.
Here’s how (from IJDH):
Just dial the Congressional Switchboard and ask to be connected with your Representative’s office: 202-224-3121. If you don’t know your Rep’s name, just give your zip code. [Alternately, you can enter your zip code at the top right of the House webpage.]
You will be connected with your Representative’s receptionist. Ask to speak with the Staff member who handles international issues.
If the Staffer is unavailable, leave a message in his/her voicemail (if the process seems intimidating, you can call after hours and be guaranteed a voicemail).
Be sure to thank everyone for their time at the end of your conversation!
It’s easy!! Just say:
Urge your Representative to sign the letter sponsored by House Members John Conyers and Mia Love for more action from the United Nations.
Eg: “I am calling to urge Representative _____ to sign the letter urging Secretary Kerry to Call for Concrete Action in Haiti from the UN” You will not be asked for further details about cholera in Haiti. But if you want to know more, click here.
Please call today! The deadline is Tuesday May 31st! Thank you for taking the time to do your part!
